Turn Your Team into a Band

Church musicians [usually] know how to play their instrument. But understanding their role in a band is another thing entirely. This is a full-band workshop to help instrumentalists and vocalists understand their place in the musical spectrum of a band. Here are some of the issues discuss:

  1. Find your Place in the Rhythmic and Sonic Spectrums
Translation: Quit stepping all over your teammates!
  2. Play in the Pocket
Translation: Learn to play not only in time, but with a internal grasp of the groove.
  3. Less is More
Translation: Less is more. (Seriously, this one is the hardest for us musicians to grasp)
  4. Monitors: More We, Less Me
Translation: Our house mix gets muddied (and that means our message gets lost) by monitors and stage amplifiers running too hot. How do I learn to play great with [gasp!] LESS ME?!
  5. Practice is Personal. Rehearsal is Relational
Translation: If you're learning the song at rehearsal, it's too late. We owe it to our team to come prepared to rehearsal. We owe it to our congregation to make the most of rehearsals musically and relationally.
